By choice, I live in a predominantly White Community. My community, like most, has changed and will continue to change. The recent events in America have impacted many leaders to look in the mirror. Because I am an active and involved member of the community, I am sometimes asked what can “we” do to be better informed about life through the eyes of our race. Spoiler alert: I am an African-American Female. First of all, I can’t nor do I try to speak for other races, but I do have a relationship with God. The Bible is my reference. So here we go:
Mark 34:35
THOSE WHO DO THE WILL OF GOD HAVE A SEAT AT THE TABLE. Mk.3:34-35
Who are Jesus’ family? Who has a seat at the table of Jesus? Jesus says it is those who do the will of God. What does that mean? Well, I can tell you that Jesus is not just talking about doing good things for others. Doing good things is important and is surely a part of doing God’s will because God’s will is always good. But we’re not just talking about a general sense of doing good. It is more than that.
Doing the will of God means that we are willing to serve Him. In Mk.3:14 it says, “And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach.” Doing the will of God involves serving the Lord.
It is time for people of diverse backgrounds to have a seat at the table. How do we get a seat? We need to be invited. We can’t force ourselves on you, but maybe just maybe, if we are invited to have a seat at the table, together we can do the will of God.
Satan will win if we are unable to collaboratively develop strategies to support people of all races. Step one, leaders have to listen and engage with people of other races. Their viewpoints are different. Different is not bad. Different is different. Step two, I invite those of you in charge of or leading anything, to invite others who don’t look like you to have a SEAT AT THE TABLE.
This is a great start.
